Our skin is always busy protecting us from microbes and the elements, helping regulate body temperature, and permitting the sensations of touch, heat, and cold. With so many jobs it is not surprising that sometimes our skin fails to be smooth and glowing. When we ourselves are overworked or find ourselves having a sleepless night, we may not look our best or be the most joyful in a similar fashion. Sometimes in order to allow our skin to function at its best we need to think about what is happening inside our bodies, and how this impacts our skin over time. Our skin cannot do its job alone and needs us to work with it in order to keep ourselves healthy.
Being Germ Free
Sometimes no matter how hard our skin works we still find ourselves with some type of an infection. We might find that skin damage is the cause of our infection such as when we get a cut or scrape, and we don’t clean the wound properly. We might also find that it is the other way around and it is an infection that can lead to skin issues such as cold sores being caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are many ways we can prevent infections that might harm our skin such as having our doctor perform regular STI screenings, making sure we regularly wash our skin with gentle soaps, and staying home when we are not feeling our best. We all know that when we are sick our skin looks pale and washed out so by focusing on our health, we can have the bright skin that we are looking for.
Eating Well
Healthy skin depends on us eating a well-balanced diet. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables will lead to better looking skin than if we live on a diet of fried foods and starches instead. So add some dark leafy greens to your lunch or dinner today if you want better looking skin. It is important to note that sometimes no matter how hard we try we find that our diets need a boost in the form of supplements like an Omega-3 or a Vitamin B12 complex. Taking a supplement does not mean we are not trying to eat healthy instead it simply means certain nutrients are hard to find in the foods at our local grocery store. Giving our bodies the vitamins and minerals that it needs means that our skin can function at its best.
Staying Hydrated
Without adequate water intake, skin appears duller, and wrinkles and pores are more prominent making our skin appear older than it really is. Proper hydration levels help the skin to become plump and improves its elasticity meaning it’s less likely to crack and have irritations and blemishes which means both our skin looks better and it is better able to keep our insides inside, and germs outside. There are a wide range of ways that we can consume liquids, for example by drinking water or fruit juice or eating foods that have a high water content such as cucumbers or green peppers. So have that extra glass of water with your meal and your skin will thank you for it.
Using Lotion
Another way to make sure that our skin looks its best is to invest in a good lotion. Lotions help our skin stay moisturized and can reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles. Lotions also help create an extra barrier helping our skin keep germs out of our bodies. Picking a good lotion often comes down to personal preference and there are a wide selection of options coming in all our favorite scents and specially formulated for all our personal needs. So, treat your skin and yourself to some self-care and use some of your favorite lotion.
If we take care of our skin by preventing infections, eating a well-balanced diet, getting plenty of fluids, and using a nice lotion each day we will have much more success with our skin. Often, we don’t have an excuse for dull, dry, or problematic skin. If we take the time to take care of our bodies, then our skin will be able to take care of us. Considering everything that our skin does for us it is important that we pamper our skin.
