It is estimated that around 3 million people are moving to new cities each week.
That’s a lot of people who are packing up their things, leaving the comfort of their familiar environment, and starting over. But, if you are new to a city, it can sometimes feel like you are the only one in the world who is starting over. It can feel like everyone you meet is settled in, has friends, and never feels lonely.
The truth is, a lot of people are in the same boat as you are. But if you are living on a tight budget, how are you supposed to meet these people? Saying yes to happy hours and girls’ nights out is a great way to meet people, but it can also burn a hole in your wallet.
So, how do you meet people in a new city without going broke?
Check out this guide to find out.
Join the Right Sites and Apps
There are many sites and apps out there that are dedicated to helping people like you meet local singles and local friends.
If you’re just starting out, one great app to use is Meetup. Meetup is an app (and website) that allows people just like you to create groups based on their interests. Some groups people start include hiking groups, book clubs, local excursion groups, tech groups, language exchange groups, dog lovers groups, and the list goes on and on.
Then, other people who are interested in these groups join them (free of charge) and attend the scheduled meetups. Meetups tend to be scheduled anywhere from once a week to once every couple of months.
Because many of the meetup groups involve doing something, this is a great way to meet people in a low-pressure environment where you don’t feel like you constantly have to fill the silence with conversation.
It’s also great for those who don’t drink a lot and are looking for alternatives to happy hours.
Volunteer
With volunteering, you get to kill two birds with one stone: meet people who have common interests, and give back to your local community.
Plus, volunteering doesn’t cost you anything but your time. You can volunteer for a local organization that interests you (for example, a dog shelter if you’re a pet-lover) or volunteer for a local event in order to get free entry.
Many charities and non-profits also host concerts, auctions, and other fun events. In addition to your regular volunteering hours, these events can be a great way to meet people in your area.
Join a Sports League
Don’t worry if you’re not the next Lebron James or Derek Jeter – there are local sports leagues that encourage people of all levels of athletic ability to join.
There are all different sports leagues you can join. From bowling to kickball to dodgeball, you are sure to find a sports league that suits your style.
Sports leagues are especially great because of the fact that you play with the same team every week. Seeing the same people on a weekly basis makes it much more easy to form a deeper bond with them.
