There were several drugs available for treating erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), etc. considering the success of these drugs, the companies thought of trying something similar to these for women as well.
Consideration of Problems related to Women’s Sexual Health
Initially, there were no such drugs or medications with the approval of the Food and Drug Administration for treating issues concerned with sexual desires in women. Though, Viagra has been used for treating sexual dysfunction in women. But the U.S.-based Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not allowed the use of Viagra for women.
After the increasing number of cases of women’s sexual concerns, FDA finally approved two medications for treating women’s sexual arousal.
Medications for women’s sexual concerns
Countering female sexual responses is much more complicated than that of men. When FDA considered problems in women’s sexual life, it approved two medications, the daily pill Flibanserin or Addyi and an injectable bremelanotide or Vyleesi.
Addyi was initially developed to treat antidepressant conditions. But later it started being used as a daily pill for treating the lack of sexual desire in women before the menopausal period. It is also known as Flibanserin. Addyi helps in boosting sexual pleasure for women suffering from low sexual sensations and getting distressed.
Along with its effects, it comes with some side effects too. So there are some things that you should know before taking Addyi. A few are listed below.
Feeling of uneasiness
While boosting the sex drive, Addyi can also cause an increase in problems like low blood pressure, dizziness, nausea and fainting, etc.
Say no to alcohol during Addyi medication
Taking Addyi with alcohol should be avoided. You should wait for at least 4 to 5 hours after drinking alcohol to consume your Addyi dose. FDA strictly states, that if you had alcohol in the evening, you should not take your bedtime dose of Addyi or if you had your Addyi dose at bedtime do not intake any kind of alcohol before the next day.
No Addyi with liver problems
As Addyi was initially created to deal with anxiety and depression conditions, you should completely avoid having Addyi if you are suffering from any liver problems. As it may result in other severe issues or diseases.
Consult the doctor first
One of the major points you should remember is to never initiate any medication without a doctor’s consultation. Experts advise stopping the drug if there is no effect on your sexual arousal even after eight weeks.
To go for any medication it is important to first consult with an expert or specialist. Before medication, the correct diagnosis of the issue is important. An expert like a doctor will first examine your symptoms, and your conditions, and will identify the real issue and the cause of the issue so that the right medication can be suggested for better and effective treatment.
Similarly in sexual problems, there can be several reasons for lack or difficulty in sexual desires, such as:
- A stressed lifestyle can also lead to reduced sexual desire in women.
- A relationship, menopause, and big life changes may also affect sexual desire.
- Mental or psychological disorders also have an impact on sexual life.
- Diseases like diabetes and heart-related problems can also affect sexual sensation.
Initially, there was not much consideration for the sexual health of women, but with time mega firms like Food and Drug Administration have taken steps to improve it. Medications are being approved for the issues related to women’s sexual desires. But like other drugs, they also have had some side effects. This article includes some of the concerns and side effects of women’s sexual arousal and medications.
